This workshop for White (European descent) identified PNA Conference participants will feature Playback Theatre, Theatre of the Oppressed, as well as some didactic/informational training. Participants will engage in self-reflection and dialogue with the primary goal of minimizing racial harm during the upcoming conference. The co-learning during our time together will also aim to support participants to actively create healthier, more racially conscious, anti-oppressive environments within their Playback companies as well as other aspects of their lives. As the process will build upon itself, we ask that participants attend the full 2-day (8 hours) workshop in its entirety.
Organizers of this event and the facilitator, will be actively accountable to a team of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) PNA members regarding intention, content, and overall agenda.
Cost: $5-$250 (sliding scale) – $150 Suggested. Please pay what you can.
*All proceeds from this event will be split between a PNA Fund earmarked for BIPOC Initiatives and the Mandala Center’s BIPOC Leadership Fund.
MARC WEINBLATT is Founder & Co-Director of the Mandala Center for Change based in Port Townsend, WA, USA, with his wife Zhaleh Almaee. A professional educator, theatre director, activist, and workshop facilitator since 1980, Marc is an internationally recognized leader in the use of Augusto Boal’s Theater of the Oppressed (T.O.) and has trained thousands in the use of the techniques around the world. He has worked with diverse communities ranging from homeless youth to police, grassroots organizers and laborers to academics. Internationally, Marc has worked with activists in Norway, Holland, and Canada, youth workers in Guatemala, refugees in Azerbaijan, ex-combatants in Northern Ireland, construction workers in South Africa, slum families in India, community workers in the Republic of Congo, and victims of war, among others, in Afghanistan. He has developed a particular speciality – working with White people on race and has led many White Affinity spaces – both for the general public and in a wide variety of organizational/institutional settings over the last 25 years. Marc has also been a Playback practitioner since the early 1990’s and is founder and Co-Director the multi-generational Poetic Justice Theatre Ensemble, which incorporates T.O. and Playback Theatre techniques to generate community dialogue on burning social issues. www.mandalaforchange.com
